Renowned Lalon singer Farida Parveen has been under intensive care at Universal Hospital in Dhaka for nearly a week. A medical board has been formed for her advanced treatment.

Dr Didarul Alam, the medical officer at the ICU of Universal Hospital, informed The Times of Bangladesh, “Farida Parveen is undergoing regular dialysis. We formed a 10-member medical board on Wednesday as her physical condition deteriorated.”

He further explained that a five-member medical board is regularly monitoring her condition, with Professor Dr AK Azad, a specialist in medicine, leading the team.

Earlier, Farida’s husband, Gazi Abdul Hakim, revealed that the singer had been taken to the ICU three times before due to respiratory problems. In February, she spent 13 days in the ICU before being transferred to a cabin after her condition improved.

He said they want Farida to get better treatment at home or abroad. For this, they need government’s support to facilitate this. However, he clarified that they are not seeking any financial assistance.

Farida Parveen, born on December 31, 1954, in Shaoul village, Singra upazila, Natore, first gained fame for her renditions of Nazrul and patriotic songs.

However, it was in Lalon songs that she gained widespread recognition. She became a registered Nazrul Sangeet artist at Rajshahi Betar in 1968.

In 1973, she started learning Lalon music from several prominent gurus, including Moksed Ali Sain.

Over the years, Farida has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Ekushey Padak in 1987, the Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize in Japan in 2008, and the National Film Award for best playback singer in 1993.

Farida Parveen, who has been involved in the practice and promotion of Lalon music for nearly five decades, founded the ‘Achin Pakhi Music Academy’ 16 years ago.

However, due to health issues and financial difficulties, the academy has not been functioning as intended.
