Gazipur Agricultural University (GAU) has organised a tree plantation programme across its six residential halls as part of the government’s five-year initiative to plant 250 million trees and build a self-reliant Bangladesh.
The programme was held on Sunday at 11:30am at the university’s residential halls, with Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr GKM Mostafizur Rahman leading the initiative, said a press release. The university launched the plantation drive as part of its efforts to make the campus more attractive and environmentally sustainable.
The initiative began at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Hall and was followed by plantation activities at the New Female Hall, Ila Mitra Hall, Begum Rokeya Hall, Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master Hall and the New Male Hall. A variety of improved fruit-bearing tree saplings were planted at each hall premises.
The tree plantation programme was earlier inaugurated on 11 July 2026 by Education Minister Dr A N M Ehsanul Haque Milan as the chief guest during the orientation programme for newly admitted students of the summer term at Gazipur Agricultural University.
The plantation event was attended by Professor Dr Md Jahidur Rahman, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the university; Professor Dr Md Safiul Islam Afrad, Treasurer; Professor Dr Nasrin Akter Ivy, Convener of the Tree Plantation and Environment Day Committee; Professor Dr Md Abiar Rahman, Member Secretary; deans and directors of different faculties; Professor Dr Mohammad Saiful Alam, Proctor; Registrar Md Abdullah Mridha; residential hall provosts; and teachers, students, officers and employees.
Speaking at a brief discussion held on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr GKM Mostafizur Rahman said, “Tree plantation is not only a programme for protecting the environment, but also a commitment to building a liveable Bangladesh for future generations. Gazipur Agricultural University is firmly committed to implementing the government’s initiative of building a self-reliant Bangladesh by integrating agriculture, the environment and human welfare.”
The university said the plantation programme created a festive atmosphere on campus, with collective participation turning the event into a shared green commitment. As part of preserving the memory and spirit of the July 2024 mass uprising and implementing the university’s long-term 50-year master plan, Gazipur Agricultural University has already planted herbal and flowering tree saplings at different locations across the campus.
