An inmate escaped from the old district jail in Khulna on Thursday afternoon after climbing over its boundary wall, prison officials said.

The inmate, identified as Emon Majhi, 30, escaped at around 4:45pm, Khulna Jail Superintendent Md Abu Sayem confirmed.

Emon had been in jail since 13 June after being arrested in a theft case filed with Sonadanga Model Police Station.

He is the son of Abdul Majhi, a tenant at a house owned by Zia in the Battola intersection area of Sachibunia under Labanchara Police Station.

According to jail authorities, Emon climbed over the eastern boundary wall of the old district jail, located adjacent to the Khulna District Bar Association, at around 4:40pm and fled.

The incident was captured on the prison’s CCTV cameras.

Jail Superintendent Abu Sayem said CCTV footage showed Emon jumping over the wall and escaping without any assistance from outside.

He said all law enforcement agencies had been requested to help arrest the escaped inmate, while security at the jail had been tightened following the incident.
