A Dhaka court has issued arrest warrants against City Group Chairman Md Hasan and four others in a case filed over allegations of embezzlement and fraud involving advertisement bills worth Tk53,458,283 of Shomoy Media Limited.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Israt Jahan passed the order after hearing both sides and reviewing the case documents on Tuesday afternoon, said the court official Omedar Ankon Mondol.
Shomoy TV’s former director Ahmed Zubair filed the case. However, the accused applied for withdrawal of the case, but the court rejected the plea and issued arrest warrants.
The other accused are Shomoy TV’s former Managing Director Shampa Rahman, former director Morshedul Islam, former head of Marketing Md Ahsanul Islam, and former senior manager (marketing) Ayesha Siddika.
According to the case statement, the accused, in collusion and by abusing their authority, issued a notice on 1 September 2024, unlawfully waiving advertisement bills for that month.
They allegedly collected Tk53,458,283 in advertisement bills for August from various institutions but did not deposit the money into the company’s accounts, instead misappropriating it.
Later, a notice was sent via email demanding the return of the money and receipt books, but the accused did not respond. As the police station refused to register the case, the plaintiff approached the court, which took cognisance of the case.
