Detective Branch (DB) police on Sunday sought a 10-day remand for television actor Zaher Alvi, also known as Md Niamat Ullah Bhuiyan, in a case filed over allegations that he abetted the suicide of his wife, Afra Evnat Khan Ikra.
The application was submitted to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka by the case’s investigating officer, DB Inspector Md Abdul Malek of the Mirpur Division. A hearing on the remand plea will be held later in the presence of the accused.
Assistant Public Prosecutor Advocate Harunur Rashid confirmed the development.
During the remand hearing, the investigating officer told the court that Alvi used to post photographs with other women on Facebook in what he described as provocative posts.
Earlier, on June 18, Alvi surrendered before the court and sought bail through his lawyers. Following a hearing, Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin rejected the bail petition and ordered that he be sent to jail.
According to the case statement, Ikra was found hanging from a ceiling fan with a scarf around her neck at their residence in Mirpur DOHS on February 28. Family members rescued her and, along with the landlord, took her to Kurmitola Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
The case was filed later that night by Ikra’s father, Kabir Hayat Khan.
In the complaint, he alleged that prolonged family disputes and various forms of abuse had forced his daughter to take her own life.
In connection with the same case, Alvi’s mother, Nasrin Sultana Shiuli, surrendered before the court on June 4 and was granted bail.
