After being postponed five times due to legal complications, the biennial election of the Chattogram Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) is finally scheduled to take place on 23 May.
The election date was announced by the chamber’s election board through a notification signed by its chairman and Director of the Local Government Department in Chattogram, Monowara Begum. According to the notice, voting will be held to elect 18 directors from the ordinary and associate member categories.
As per the schedule, polling will continue uninterrupted from 9:00am to 4:00pm on 23 May at the World Trade Centre in Agrabad.
A press release signed by Chamber Joint Secretary Nurul Absar Chowdhury said the election notice has already been published on the chamber’s notice board, official website, and Facebook page.
The last competitive election of the Chattogram chamber was held on 30 March 2013.
Under the chamber’s Articles of Association, 12 directors from the Ordinary Group and six directors from the Associate Group are elected directly through voting. In addition, three directors each from the Town Association and Trade Group are selected unopposed through consensus. The chamber president, senior vice-president, and vice-president are later elected by votes of the 24 directors.
The organisation currently has 401 ordinary members, 2,764 associate members, five Town Association members, and 10 Trade Group members, bringing total membership to 6,780.
Two panels are contesting the election. One is the United Business Forum, led by former FBCCI director Amirul Haque, while the other is the Samaman Parishad, led by former senior vice-president SM Nurul Haque.
