Upcoming film ‘Rongbazar’ has been released directly on a digital streaming platform after the film was leaked online before its scheduled cinema release.
The decision was taken after the production team failed to prevent pirated copies from circulating on the internet ahead of the planned theatrical launch. The film premiered on Sunday through the Cinematic app operated by Live Technologies.
Director Rashid Polash confirmed the development to local media, saying the move was made at the producer’s request.
“It is disappointing for me as a filmmaker. But perhaps the producer had no other option to save the film from piracy,” he said.
The film centres on the eviction of a red-light district and portrays the lives and struggles connected to the controversial incident.
The cast includes Peya Jannatul, Shampa Reza, Naznin Chumki, Tanjika Amin, Mousumi Hamid, Lutfur Rahman George, Borda Mithu, Samrat and Manik Saha.
The screenplay was written by Golam Rabbani.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the impact of piracy on Bangladesh’s film industry, where several productions have suffered financial losses after unauthorised copies surfaced online before official release dates
