Traders face severe challenges storing and selling raw hides in Khulna due to the absence of a permanent market, particularly during Eid-ul-Adha, when demand surges.
For the past six to seven years, temporary roadside markets have been the only option, raising concerns over preservation, transport, and public inconvenience.
The Sheikhpara area, once known as ‘Sheikhpara Chamra Potti’ for its concentration of hide trading, now struggles as most shops have closed. Traders allege that without a proper market, they are forced to store salted hides on open roads, causing odour issues and worsening traffic congestion.
Babar Ali, a Sheikhpara trader, said, “We used to run about ten shops with 35 traders. Landlords no longer allow hide shops, so the businesses gradually closed. Many traders shut down because tanneries have not paid their dues.
“We need a permanent market where hides can be bought and sold at regulated prices, benefiting both traders and the public.”
Kartik Ghosh, general secretary of the Khulna Raw Hide Traders Association, added, “Without storage facilities, traders face extreme difficulties. The traditional Chamra Potti is now lost. Only a handful of traders remain, whereas previously mahajans and seasonal intermediaries operated widely.”
Abdus Salam Dhali, the association president, warned, “The trade is on the brink of collapse. In the past, we collected 60,000–70,000 hides during Eid, with as many traders active. Now only a few maintain their businesses.
“Large dues from tanneries force traders to sell on the streets. A modern, permanent market is urgently needed to save this sector.”
According to local sources, 22,742 raw hides were collected in Khulna district during last year’s Eid. The ministry of industries remains optimistic about the industry’s potential, with Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir stating that proper planning and modern management could generate around $12 billion in annual exports.
Khulna City Corporation Administrator Nazrul Islam Monju said, “If traders submit proposals for a hide market, the city corporation will consider them and identify a suitable location.”
