Woman dies after scarf caught in autorickshaw wheel in Dhaka’s Demra

A young woman has died after her scarf got tangled in the wheel of a battery-powered autorickshaw, strangling her and causing her to fall from the vehicle in the Demra area of the capital.

The accident occurred around 5:30pm on Monday on Demra Konapara Road, according to police and witnesses.

The deceased was identified as Kamini, 24, a garment worker. She is the daughter of Kamrul Islam, with her hometown in Jhalokathi Sadar Upazila. She had been residing on Matuail Madrasa Market Road in Jatrabari at the time of the incident.

At Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), Kamini’s coworker Sharmin Akter said both of them work at a garment factory named ARR Dismatics Limited on Matuail Madrasa Market Road.

“After the factory shift ended in the afternoon, Kamini was going to Demra Konapara on a battery-powered autorickshaw with a friend,” Sarmin said.

“On Konapara Road, her scarf got tangled in the wheel of the rickshaw. She was strangled by the scarf and fell from the rickshaw, sustaining severe injuries,” she added.

Locals and coworkers immediately took Kamini to a local hospital in Konapara, from where she was referred and brought to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Doctors at DMCH declared her dead around 6:45pm, according to hospital sources.

The police camp in-charge at DMCH, Inspector Md Faruq, said the body has been kept in the morgue.

“Detailed identification of the deceased garment worker has not been obtained,” he added.
