A Dhaka court has granted three days’ remand for former lawmaker and Lt Gen (retd) Masud Uddin Chowdhury in a murder case filed centring anti-discrimination student movement.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasibullah Piyas passed the order following a petition by DB (Mirpur Division) Sub‑inspector Md Habib Ullah, investigation officer of the case.
State counsel Harun‑ur‑Rashid argued in favour of remand, calling the accused a key figure of the 1/11 period and alleging he forced current Prime Minister Tarique Rahman into exile.
On the other hand, defense lawyers sought bail, saying the accused is over 70, was not named in the FIR, and faces no specific charges.
They also requested permission for him to speak with his family by phone, which the court rejected.
According to the petition, victim Biplob Sheikh, 19, joined the anti‑discrimination student movement at Mirpur‑10 on 19 July 2024, when armed men in the case opened fire to disperse demonstrators. He was shot in the neck and waist and later succumbed to his injuries the same night.
