The Bangladesh Students’ Association (BSA) at the University of Calgary recently organised a grand reception for newly admitted students alongside a formal farewell ceremony for its graduating cohort.
Held at the university’s ICT Building in Calgary, Alberta, the event served as a vibrant showcase of Bangladeshi culture and traditions, effectively turning the gathering into a festive celebration for the local expatriate community.
The proceedings commenced on an emotional note with the rendition of the national anthems of both Bangladesh and Canada.
This was followed by a diverse cultural programme featuring patriotic melodies, international musical performances, and poetry recitations that captivated the attendees.
A highlight of the festivities was a drawing competition specifically arranged for children, where winners were presented with prizes.
The event’s entertainment further included interactive game shows and an exciting raffle draw.
The gathering saw significant participation from the Bangladeshi diaspora in Alberta, drawing together a diverse group of professionals, including engineers, physicians, journalists, and business leaders, who attended with their families.
Addressing the assembly, BSA President Md. Taibur Rahman emphasised that such initiatives are essential for preserving Bangladeshi heritage on foreign soil while facilitating a robust network between students and seasoned professionals.
He noted that these professional connections are pivotal for the career development and future employment prospects of the younger generation.
Echoing these sentiments, BSA Vice President Shubham Agarwal spoke on the importance of such events in fostering unity and mutual cooperation within the Bangladeshi community abroad.
The event was graced by BSA advisors Professor Dr Anis Haque and Safkat Mahmud. Other notable community figures in attendance included Saiful Islam Ripon, President of the Association of Bangladeshi Engineers of Alberta (ABEAC); Eakbal Rahman, President of the Bangladesh Canada Association of Calgary (BCAOC); and Dr Mohammad Laskar, President of the Bangladeshi Society of Calgary (BSC).
The distinguished guests highly commended the significant and growing impact of the Bangladeshi community on Alberta’s economy, specifically noting their professional excellence in the sectors of education, healthcare, and information technology.
As the ceremony concluded, members of the BSA executive committee were honoured with special gifts to recognise their dedicated service and contributions. The evening ended with a dinner reception, marked by a warm and celebratory atmosphere.
