A Dhaka court has ordered two individuals — including a leader of the banned Chhatra League — to be sent to jail in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act over a surprise procession at Dhaka University, police said on Saturday.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehedi Hasan issued the order on Saturday afternoon following a police application, according to court sources.
Those sent to jail are Farhan Tanvir Nashif, organising secretary of Chhatra League at Dhaka University’s Sir AF Rahman Hall, and microbus driver Md Rubel Mia. A police application for their remand is still pending, their lawyer Md Tarikul Islam confirmed.
The remand application stated that the names and addresses provided by the accused are suspicious, and if released on bail, they may flee permanently, disrupting the investigation. It argued that keeping them in jail custody until the investigation concludes is necessary for a proper probe.
According to the case, between approximately 6:10am and 6:15am on Saturday, the accused allegedly held a procession from the Metro Rail Station at Dhaka University to in front of the TSC Raju Sculpture, shouting various provocative slogans.
Their aim was to activate the banned organisation’s activities, conspire against the government and state, and spread propaganda, the case states. They chanted slogans including for the repeal of the “Black Law” and the lifting of bans on Awami League and its affiliated organisations.
Upon receiving information, Shahbagh Police Station conducted an operation and arrested Nashif and Rubel red-handed along with a microbus. Another 20-25 people fled upon seeing police.
Sub-Inspector Md Mainul Islam of Shahbagh Police Station filed the case under the Anti-Terrorism Act over the incident.
