Bangladesh has developed an artificial intelligence-based screening tool, SmartEndo, to detect early risk of endometriosis, aiming to cut long diagnosis delays and improve women’s reproductive health outcomes.
The initiative was presented at a dissemination seminar organised by Endometriosis and Adenomyosis Society of Bangladesh (ESB), the organisers said in a statement.
Endometriosis is a chronic, hormone-dependent condition that can cause severe menstrual pain, infertility, and reduced quality of life.
Globally, around one in ten women of reproductive age are affected, yet diagnosis in Bangladesh often takes six to ten years.
SmartEndo analyses patient symptoms, clinical data, and risk factors to assess the likelihood of the disease within three to five minutes.
The tool recorded 91.0 per cent sensitivity, 94.8 per cent specificity, and 93.0 per cent overall accuracy during validation.
It is available in both Bangla and English, allowing wider access for users and healthcare providers.
Director General of Health Services Director Professor Pravath Chandra Biswas attended the seminar as chief guest.
Bangladesh Medical University Pro Vice Chancellor of Research and Development Professor Md Mujibur Rahman Hawlader, Bangladesh Medical Research Council Chairman Professor Sayeba Akhter, Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society of Bangladesh President Professor Firoza Begum, and Incepta Pharmaceuticals Chairman and Managing Director Abdul Muktadir attended as special guests.
Incepta Pharmaceuticals Limited acted as the scientific partner and supported the development and clinical trial of the tool in collaboration with ESB.
Principal investigator Professor Sameena Chowdhury said early detection remains a major challenge.
“In Bangladesh, diagnosing endometriosis often takes several years. This AI-based tool can help identify risk at an early stage, enabling timely referral and initiation of appropriate treatment,” she said.
Experts said wider adoption of such digital tools could reduce diagnostic delays, lower treatment costs, and support the country’s growing digital healthcare ecosystem.
