April 6 marks what would have been the 95th birthday of Suchitra Sen, a timeless icon whose name remains synonymous with the golden era of Bengali cinema.
Renowned for her captivating screen presence and enigmatic persona, Sen not only defined an era on screen but also nurtured a remarkable bond with her family.
Her daughter, Moonmoon Sen, recently shared reflections on their unique relationship with Indian media Anandabazar. She revealed how her early years were intertwined with her mother’s film career, assisting with costumes and makeup. She even designed the gown Suchitra wore in ‘Fariyad’ and created the blouse for the classic Debi Chaudhurani. Young Moonmoon would help with small touches, like applying sandalwood on her mother’s forehead during a wedding scene.
Despite her fame, Suchitra Sen remained devoted to family. Moon Moon recalls that after long days on set, her mother would cherish her drawings and other creative work, offering encouragement that left a lasting impression.
Born Rama Dasgupta on April 6, 1931, in Hemsagar Lane, Pabna, Suchitra was the fifth child of Karunamoy Dasgupta, a sanitary inspector, and Indira Devi, a homemaker.
Suchitra Sen entered cinema in 1952 with ‘Shesh Kothay’ and the following year starred opposite Uttam Kumar in ‘Sharey Chuattar’, a pairing that became legendary through films like ‘Agni Pariksha’, ‘Sabar Uparey’, ‘Harano Sur’ and ‘Priya Bandhabi’. Her debut in Hindi cinema came with ‘Devdas’ in 1955.
Suchitra Sen was honoured with the Padma Shri in 1972 and later received the Bangla Vibhushan from the West Bengal government in 2012. After stepping away from the public eye in 1978, she passed away on January 17, 2014, in Kolkata.
Today, fans and family alike remember her not only as a cinematic legend but also as a devoted mother who inspired creativity and love in those around her.
