The Minister for Commerce, Textiles, Jute and Industry Khandaker Abdul Muktadir on Friday urged citizens to become “energy-conscious” for the sake of the nation, emphasising that efficient energy use is vital for the welfare of the entire country.
Speaking to reporters at his residence in Sylhet at 5pm following a meeting with local business leaders, the minister explained that saving energy would allow it to be utilised for a longer duration and reduce fuel imports, which in turn would lower foreign currency expenditure.
He assured the public that there is no need for “undue panic” regarding fuel supplies and called for the maintenance of normalcy.
Addressing potential changes to government and private office hours amidst the global fuel crisis, the minister stated that normalcy can be maintained if caution is exercised and unnecessary risks are avoided.
He noted that peak hours begin after 6pm and that conserving electricity during this window would prevent extra expenses while providing long-term savings.
Muktadir further observed that while many countries utilise daylight savings adjustments, Bangladesh does not; however, precautionary steps have been taken to ensure the disciplined implementation of government initiatives.
Regarding the hike in LPG prices, the minister attributed the increase to rising costs in exporting countries such as Saudi Arabia.
He provided assurances that fuel prices will remain steady as long as the national economy remains stable. Furthermore, he confirmed that the Ministry of Energy has secured consistent distribution to ensure that gas-reliant industries continue to receive an uninterrupted supply.
The minister also highlighted strategic efforts to attract foreign investment and secure the country’s economic future following its LDC graduation. These initiatives include a pending Economic Partnership Agreement with Japan and preparations for free trade agreements with several other nations to secure preferential treatment for Bangladeshi products.
Earlier in the day, the minister arrived in Sylhet via a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight. He offered Friday prayers at the Pir Mohalla Jame Mosque and met with local residents before convening the discussion with business representatives.
The meeting was attended by several prominent figures, including the acting president of Sylhet BNP Rezaul Hasan koyes Lodi, former president Nasim Hossain, general secretary Emdad Hossain Chowdhury, and the former president of the Sylhet Chamber, Khandaker Shiper Ahmed.
