A 60-year-old farmer was allegedly beaten to death by his rivals following a dispute over cattle grazing in a Boro paddy field in Madan Upazila of Netrakona on Thursday evening.
The deceased, identified as Bachhu Talukdar, was a resident of Nayekpur (East Para) village.
According to police and local sources, the incident occurred at the Nayekpur Haor. Bachhu Talukdar had cultivated Boro paddy on a piece of mortgaged land near Makhna village and was preparing to harvest the crop within a few days. For several days, cattle belonging to residents of Makhna village had been entering his field and damaging the crops. Although he had reported the matter to the relevant parties multiple times, no resolution was reached.
On the day of the incident, Talukdar went to his field and found the crop devastated by the cattle. When he began shouting in protest, Koril Islam and several others from Makhna village arrived at the scene. Following a heated argument, Koril Islam and his associates allegedly attacked Talukdar with wooden sticks. He sustained critical injuries and died on the spot.
Hasnat Zaman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Madan Police Station, stated that police reached the scene upon receiving the information. “An inquest report has been prepared, and the body has been recovered and sent to Netrakona for an autopsy,” the OC said.
He further assured that necessary legal action would be taken following the filing of a written complaint regarding the incident.
