A Dhaka court has sentenced a woman to life imprisonment for hacking her husband to death in Sirajganj Sadar upazila.
Sirajganj Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-3 Judge Md Nazrul Islam delivered the verdict on Monday afternoon.
The court also fined the convict Tk20,000, with an additional one year of simple imprisonment in default.
Sirajganj Additional Public Prosecutor Hamidul Islam Dulal confirmed the matter.
The convict, Israt Jahan Ema, is a resident of Mugbelai village in Kamarkhand upazila.
According to the charge sheet, Ema married S M Sayem of Kalyani Purba Para in Kalia Haripur union of Sirajganj Sadar upazila in 2012. Before the marriage, Sayem worked as a security guard at Pubali Bank in Sylhet.
The case documents said Ema used to communicate with several men, including neighbour Shahadat, over the phone during Sayem’s absence, leading to family disputes between the couple.
On 8 July 2022, Sayem returned home for Eid-ul-Azha.
In the afternoon, after taking a bath and returning home, Ema served him a drink mixed with sleeping pills.
After he fell asleep, Ema allegedly mixed sleeping pills with soft drinks and served them to other family members.
Once they fell asleep, she, along with two to three unidentified accomplices, hacked Sayem to death with sharp weapons late at night, according to the case statement.
Following the incident, the victim’s father Sheikh Farid filed a case naming Ema and two to three unidentified persons as accused.
After examining witness testimonies and evidence, the court found Ema guilty and handed down the life sentence.
