Former Water Resources Minister and former lawmaker of Thakurgaon-1 (Sadar Upazila) Ramesh Chandra Sen died on Saturday after falling ill at Dinajpur District Jail, officials said.
He was rushed to the emergency department of Dinajpur Medical College Hospital early in the morning, where doctors pronounced him dead at 9:29am.
He was 83 years old.
Sources at Dinajpur District Jail said Ramesh Chandra was arrested by Thakurgaon police on 16 August and sent to Thakurgaon District Jail through the court.
He was later transferred to Dinajpur District Jail on 17 August. He had been detained in connection with three cases, including a murder charge.
Jail superintendent Md Farhad Ghosh confirmed the death and said Ramesh Chandra had been suffering from heart disease, and other health complications.
He was receiving regular treatment inside the jail.
“After he fell ill around 9am today, he received initial treatment and was taken to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital, where he was pronounced dead,” the superintendent said.
He added that the body would be handed over to the family after completing the necessary legal formalities.
Ramesh Chandra Sen was born on 30 April 1940 in Kashalgonj village of Ruhia Union in Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila. His parents were Khitindra Mohan Sen and Balashwari Sen.
He studied at Rangpur Carmichael College.
Ramesh Chandra Sen served as a member of parliament five times and was elected MP in 2024 on an Awami League nomination. He also served as a Presidium member of the party.
