The Chattogram Bondor Rokkha Shangram Parishad has announced an indefinite strike at the port, beginning at 8am on Sunday.
The decision was announced at a press conference at the Chattogram Press Club around noon on Saturday.
Ibrahim Khokon, coordinator of the Parishad, declared the new programme and reiterated several demands, including the resignation of Chittagong Port Authority Chairman SM Moniruzzaman.
Leaders of the Parishad (Chattogram Port Protection Council) said that, unlike previous programmes, no cargo handling will be allowed at the outer anchorage during the strike. Earlier, unloading activities at the outer anchorage continued despite the work stoppage.
The organisation has been staging protests since 31 January over the process to lease the port’s New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) to DP World. Following a meeting with Shipping Adviser Brigadier General (retd) M Sakhawat Hussain, the strike was suspended for two days on Thursday.
However, the leaders announced the resumption of the strike again on Saturday, citing a lack of satisfactory progress on their demands.
