Expatriates sent a record Tk20,000 crore in remittances to Bangladesh through bKash in 2025, benefiting around 41 lakh recipient accounts, according to the mobile financial service provider. This figure represents a significant surge from the previous year, with the number of recipient accounts nearly doubling.
The total remittance received by Bangladesh in 2025 reached nearly $33 billion, marking a 22 per cent increase from 2024. The use of mobile financial services for remittance grew by more than 90 per cent over the same period, reflecting a growing reliance on digital platforms.
bKash explained that the increased adoption of mobile financial services was driven by their accessibility, convenience, and the ability to transfer funds instantly. Currently, expatriates can send remittances directly to bKash accounts through 135 international money transfer operators from over 170 countries. These transactions are settled through 27 commercial banks in Bangladesh.
As part of the government’s incentive scheme, remittance recipients are also eligible to receive Tk25 per thousand sent. Additionally, bKash has introduced a “Remittance Statement” feature in its app, allowing users to review and download their remittance history, which can support income tax filing.
Recipients can withdraw funds from nearby bKash agent points and more than 2,500 automated teller machines (ATMs) across the country. The cost for withdrawals through ATMs is Tk7 per thousand.
Furthermore, bKash has expanded its services to allow remittance recipients to open Deposit Pension Scheme accounts directly through the app at four banks and one financial institution.
The funds received through remittances can be used for various transactions, including utility bill payments, educational fees, and shopping payments.
