Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Director General Maj Gen Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui has officially inaugurated two new border outposts (BOPs) in Cox’s Bazar to bolster security and operational readiness.
The two facilities include the St Martin’s BOP, under the jurisdiction of the Teknaf Battalion (BGB-2), and the newly established “Sea-Beach” BOP in Teknaf.
The director general inaugurated the posts on Tuesday, confirmed by BGB-2 Battalion Commanding Officer Lt Col Md Hanifur Rahman.
According to the BGB, the St Martin’s BOP features a modern soldier line equipped with advanced facilities.
The infrastructure was designed to ensure the security of BGB personnel, enhance professional efficiency, bolster morale, and develop overall operational capacity.
Officials stated that this would lead to greater dynamism and effectiveness in the security arrangements for St Martin’s Island.
Simultaneously, the newly constructed ‘Sea-Beach’ BOP at Lengurbil in Teknaf has been built with modern and aesthetic architectural designs.
This facility is equipped with all necessary amenities and is expected to play a vital role in strengthening border security while improving the morale and operational capabilities of the BGB members stationed there.
Regarding the historical context, Lt Col Md Hanifur Rahman noted that the then Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) was responsible for the security of St Martin’s Island – located around16 kilometres south of Teknaf – until 1997. The responsibility was subsequently handed over to the Bangladesh Coast Guard.
However, considering the strategic importance and security of the border area, the Border Guard Bangladesh was redeployed to St Martin’s Island on 7 April 2019. The current inauguration marks the formal and full-scale commencement of operations for the St Martin’s BOP.
