James Cameron’s ‘Avatar: Fire & Ash’ is set to finish the final weekend of 2025 as the clear box office leader, reinforcing the franchise’s dominance during the lucrative Christmas period. The film is projected to add around $60 million in its second weekend, taking its North American total to approximately $214 million by Sunday.
The strong hold comes despite severe winter weather in major US cities and marks a steadier second-weekend performance than 2022’s ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’. With the extended Christmas frame included, the sequel has already crossed $84 million for the four-day holiday stretch.
Disney continued its festive run with ‘Zootopia 2’, which remains a major draw more than a month after release. The animated sequel is expected to collect about $19 million in its fifth weekend, pushing its domestic total beyond $320 million and edging closer to overtaking the original film’s 2016 earnings.
Among new releases, A24’s ‘Marty Supreme’, starring Timothée Chalamet, emerged as the strongest performer. The sports drama is heading for more than $25 million over its first four days, outpacing Chalamet’s previous Christmas release from last year and giving the indie studio a notable holiday success.
Sony’s ‘Anaconda’ also made a confident debut, with projections of roughly $22 million across four days. The self-aware action comedy benefited from strong audience curiosity and online buzz, particularly around its ensemble cast and lighter tone.
Meanwhile, Focus Features’ musical drama ‘Song Sung Blue’, led by Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson, is expected to finish the holiday frame with around $12 million. Though modest compared to the bigger releases, the film has drawn warm audience reactions and positioned itself as feel-good counter-programming.
Overall, the final box office weekend of 2025 reflects a robust Christmas period, with blockbuster sequels, star-led dramas and nostalgia-driven titles collectively closing the year on a high note.
