James Cameron’s ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ has ignited the North American box office, positioning itself as one of December’s strongest openings despite pre-Christmas distractions and a crowded holiday corridor.
The latest chapter in the Avatar saga is heading towards a domestic debut of around $88 million, with projections ranging between $85 million and $90 million depending on late weekend momentum. The film earned an estimated $28 million on Saturday, a modest 23 percent dip from Friday, mirroring the performance pattern of major December tentpoles. With Christmas only days away, exhibitors expect stronger attendance in the coming week as holiday routines settle.
If current estimates hold, Fire and Ash will secure the seventh biggest December opening of all time in the US, ranking behind titles such as ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’. Audience enthusiasm appears robust. Exit data shows that more than half of viewers plan to watch the film again, reinforcing the franchise’s long-standing reputation for repeat business.
Internationally, the picture is performing even more impressively. Global earnings are projected between $340 million and $350 million for its debut, driven by strong overseas demand. China alone has contributed around $52 million so far, with early audience scores there signalling high approval. As with previous Avatar films, overseas markets are expected to account for a significant share of the film’s total gross.
Disney and 20th Century Studios have backed Fire and Ash with a wide-ranging promotional campaign spanning broadcast television, sports events and digital platforms. High-profile brand partnerships and immersive online activations have helped generate substantial pre-release attention, while premium formats such as IMAX and 3D are accounting for a large proportion of ticket sales.
The film has received an A CinemaScore from audiences, continuing the franchise’s strong word-of-mouth tradition, even as critical response has been more mixed than earlier instalments. Premium screens and large-format venues remain key drivers, particularly in western and southern regions of the US.
Beyond Avatar, Angel Studios’ animated feature David is on track for a record opening of around $21 million, marking the studio’s biggest debut to date, while Lionsgate’s thriller ‘The Housemaid’ is targeting a solid $19 million opening. Family titles such as ‘SpongeBob Movie: The Search for Squarepants’ and ‘Zootopia 2’ are also benefitting from the onset of school holidays.
