In a Facebook post on his official Facebook page, National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam said that BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman’s return after 17 years “is a positive reflection of our democratic struggle.”
He went on to say, “Tarique Rahman and his family faced state persecution due to political dissent, and he had to remain in exile for a long time. The circumstances created by the mass uprising, achieved through the blood sacrifice of thousands of martyrs, have allowed him and his family to return to the country.”
He added that the Bangladeshi people want a state that believes in democratic values, where political figures are not oppressed due to their dissent, and where “our primary goal is to ensure the rule of law and political rights for every citizen.”
“We believe that Tarique Rahman’s return will further consolidate the practice of multiparty democracy in the country,” Nahid said. “Our main challenge now is to build a culture of coexistence and healthy competition in the new political reality.”
Welcoming the BNP acting chairman back to Bangladesh, Nahid concluded: “May his participation in building the democratic future of the country be fruitful.”
