Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been away from the national team for over a year, largely due to political unrest in the country. During this period, multiple cases have been filed against him in Bangladeshi courts, and he has continued to feature in overseas franchise leagues. Despite this, Shakib recently stated in a podcast that he still hopes to represent Bangladesh in the future.
Shakib was last seen in action in October 2024, playing in the Test series against India at Kanpur. Since then, questions over his potential return have persisted, particularly given his prolonged absence from domestic and international cricket.
Commenting on the matter, Bangladesh Cricket Board director Amzad Hossain said that while Shakib remains physically fit and capable of performing at the highest level for several more years, his inclusion in the national side ultimately rests with the selection committee.
“Considering Shakib Al Hasan’s fitness and current form, I believe he can continue playing at the top level for several more years,” Hossain said. “However, whether he plays for Bangladesh or not is entirely a matter for the selectors. The committee will pick whoever they consider necessary for the team’s requirements at any given time.”
Currently, Shakib is unavailable for selection as he is outside the country. Amzad added that if he returns and maintains his fitness and form, he could be given a fair opportunity to rejoin the national squad. “Cricket is a game for everyone, regardless of party or opinion. In the future, if he comes back and meets the standards, we would be interested in seeing him play again,” he noted.
Shakib, a former elected member of the dissolved Awami League-led parliament, has seen his political involvement affect his cricket career to some extent. Nonetheless, the BCB director emphasised that cricket in Bangladesh is independent of politics.
The 34-year-old southpaw has an exceptional international record, amassing over 4,600 runs in Tests, along with 7,570 runs and 317 wickets in ODIs. In T20Is, he has claimed 149 wickets and scored 2,551 runs, underlining his significance across all formats.
