State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yasser Khan Choudhury on Tuesday said a vested group is trying to create various controversies to make the police force inactive.
He urged people to remain alert, identify criminals and provide information to police discreetly to help maintain law and order.
The state minister made the remarks as the chief guest at a special meeting of the law and order committee organised by the Nandail Upazila administration at the upazila parishad conference room in Mymensingh on Tuesday afternoon.
Yaser said it is not possible for a limited number of police personnel at a single police station to independently control the law and order situation across an entire area.
He called for forming coordination committees to strengthen cooperation between police and local residents.
The state minister urged everyone to remain united and vigilant against the anti-state activities of a banned organisation.
Saying that the government has adopted a “zero tolerance” policy against drugs, he directed authorities to conduct door-to-door drives based on lists of drug traders.
He said law enforcement agencies, public representatives and ordinary citizens must play active roles alongside police to eliminate drug-related crimes.
Addressing journalists, Yaser said the media should play a leading role in preventing disorder caused by misinformation and false propaganda.
He also urged police to remain cautious so that no innocent person faces harassment.
The state minister instructed police officials not to accept false cases under any circumstances and ensure that innocent people are not harassed during law enforcement activities.
The meeting, chaired by Nandail Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Fatema Jannat, was attended by Additional Superintendent of Police Debashish Karmakar, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Salah Uddin Mahmud, Nandail Police Station Officer-in-Charge Azharul Islam, and officials from the upazila administration, law enforcement agencies and relevant departments.
After the law and order meeting, the state minister distributed leaflets as part of a dengue prevention awareness campaign.
He stressed the importance of regular cleanliness drives to destroy dengue breeding grounds.
Leaders and activists of Nandail upazila BNP and its affiliated organisations participated in the leaflet distribution programme.
Earlier, Yaser Khan Chowdhury arrived in Nandail on Tuesday afternoon on a five-day visit to Mymensingh. During the tour, he is scheduled to attend several programmes in Kishoreganj and Jamalpur.
