A court has ordered a 10-day remand for seven individuals, including Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Joint Vice President and former President of Dhaka University’s Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall, Barikul Islam Badhon. After hearing both the state and the defense on Tuesday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shahidul Islam issued this order.
The other accused sent on remand are: Satkhira District Chhatra League General Secretary Suman Hossain (33), Organizing Secretary Mezbahul Islam (25), Chhatra League leader Saiful Islam Saif (31), Md Mostafizur Rahman Johnny (37), active Jubo League worker Md Sheikh Rasheduzzaman (35), and Swechchhasebak League worker Md Mamun Sheikh Parash (32).
They were arrested from the capital’s Bijoynagar area on 31 October and sent to jail. It has been learned that these accused played a significant role in planning sabotage and creating anarchy in the capital after the fall of the Awami government, as well as in organizing flash processions for the banned organization.
On this day, the police applied for a 10-day remand for the accused. Additional Public Prosecutor Muhammad Shamsuddoha Suman presented the arguments in favour of granting the remand.
On the other hand, Advocate Farzana Yasmin Rakhi and other lawyers applied for the cancellation of the remand and sought bail for the accused. After hearing both sides, the court rejected the bail plea and ordered each accused to be placed on a 10-day remand.
The case statement alleges that on 31 October, at around 6:40am, the accused began marching with various anti-government slogans in the Bijoy Nagar water tank area under the Paltan police station.
They were detained at that time. Police filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act at the capital’s Paltan Model Police Station regarding this incident.
