Television actress Tanjin Tisha has been sued for allegedly taking a saree worth Tk 28,800 from an online fashion brand named “Aponia” without making payment and later cutting off communication with the seller.
Aponia’s executive Md Aminul Islam filed the case with Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana’s court on Wednesday.
The court recorded the complainant’s statement and directed the Detective Branch (DB) of police to investigate and submit a report by 18 February next year.
According to the case, a female entrepreneur from the fashion page recently accused Tanjin Tisha of taking a saree without payment, sparking public debate and criticism. In response, Tisha posted on her verified Facebook page claiming that the saree was a gift from the entrepreneur.
Following this, Aminul Islam’s lawyer, Supreme Court advocate Salimullah Sarkar, served a legal notice to Tisha on 22 October, demanding Tk1 lakh in compensation for fraud, defamation and deception.
The notice was sent both to her home address and via WhatsApp.
The notice required Tisha to pay compensation and publicly apologise within seven days for spreading false claims about the entrepreneur online. However, she did not respond within the given time.
As a result, the case was filed under Sections 420 and 406 of the Penal Code for fraud and breach of trust.
Lawyer Salimullah Sarkar said, “As a celebrity, Tanjin Tisha’s behaviour towards a female entrepreneur was unacceptable. She could have resolved the matter easily, but instead she made defamatory remarks on social media.
“Instead of encouraging a woman entrepreneur, she chose to deceive her. Since she ignored the legal notice, we had no option but to take the matter to court.”
