A Chattogram court has acquitted six accused in the Tasfia Amin case after nearly nine years of investigation by multiple law enforcement agencies failed to establish evidence of murder.
Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Court Judge Abu Bakkar Siddique on Thursday accepted the final report submitted by police and ordered that the accused be discharged from the case.
The court also directed that the case be filed as closed.
According to court sources, Assistant Commissioner of Police Jamal Uddin Chowdhury of the Karnaphuli zone of Chattogram Metropolitan Police submitted the latest final report on 11 June.
The report concluded that Tasfia’s death was not a murder but a case of drowning, terming the murder allegations as not supported by evidence and recommending the acquittal of all accused.
Earlier, similar final reports were submitted by the Detective Branch (DB), Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) and Criminal Investigation Department (CID), all of which found no evidence of murder.
However, the case was sent back for further investigation several times after the complainant filed no-confidence petitions against the reports.
This time, no such petition was filed within the stipulated timeframe, allowing the court to accept the final report and bring the proceedings to a close.
Tasfia Amin, a ninth-grade student of an English-medium school, went missing on 1 May, 2017, after leaving the Golpahar area in Chattogram city.
Her body was recovered the following day from the bank of the Karnaphuli River in the Patenga area.
On the day of the incident, her father, Mohammad Amin, filed a murder case naming six individuals as accused.
After years of investigation by multiple agencies, none could establish evidence of murder, leading to the closure of the widely followed case.
