The traditional Tazia mourning procession marking the holy Ashura was observed peacefully in the capital on Friday.
The main procession commenced from the historic Hussaini Dalan Imambara in Old Dhaka at 10am. Thousands of barefoot devotees participated in the march, mourning by beating their chests and chanting “Hai Hussain, Hai Hussain”.
The procession followed a designated route, moving through Hussaini Dalan, Bakshi Bazar Lane, Alia Madrasa Mor, Bakshi Bazar (Kol Par) Mor, Umesh Datta Road, Urdu Road Mor, Harnath Ghosh Road, and Lalbagh Chowrasta Mor.
It continued via Gor-e-Shahid Mazar Mor, Etimkhana Mor, Azimpur Chowrasta Mor, Eden College, Nilkhet Mor, Mirpur Road, Dhaka College, and Science Lab Mor.
The march then proceeded through Road No 2 of the Dhanmondi Residential Area, BGB Gate No 4, and Sat Masjid Road, before concluding peacefully at the symbolic ‘Karbala’ on the banks of Dhanmondi Lake at 2:30 pm.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) implemented stringent security measures for the management of the procession.
Prior to the event, the DMP issued a complete ban on carrying any weapons, including knives, daggers, scissors, spears, swords, or sticks, as well as the use of fireworks and crackers. A significant number of police personnel were deployed to ensure safety.
Under the direction of the DMP Commissioner, police officers and members at all levels provided seamless security, resulting in the successful completion of the event without any untoward incidents.
The 10th of Muharram is a deeply mournful and significant day. To mark the occasion, various mourning programmes and Tazia processions were organised at Hussaini Dalan, Bara Katara Imambara, and other Imambaras across Old Dhaka.
