A case was filed on Friday in connection with the brutal killing of four members of a family in Raipur municipality of Lakshmipur, while questions remain over the motive and possible involvement of others in the attack.
The complaint was lodged at Raipur Police Station by the son of the deceased woman, police said.
The victims- a mother and her three daughters – were hacked to death at their residence in a busy area of the municipal town on Thursday.
They were identified as Shahinur Begum, 38, and her daughters Sayma Akter, 21, Nafisa Akter Ikra, 17, and Fatema Akter Shifa, 10.
The accused attacker, identified as 28-year-old Antar Majumder, was later beaten to death by an angry mob.
Police said no case has yet been filed over his death, but preparations are underway.
Following autopsies at Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital, the bodies of the victims were handed over to their relatives.
Family members said the bodies would be taken to their ancestral village for burial.
According to police and eyewitnesses, the attack took place Thursday morning at a ground-floor apartment of a five-storey building on Dhanhata Riverbank Road, owned by Amir Hossain Master.
Locals said that after hearing screams, a neighbour, Afroza Begum Rani, saw a man inside the apartment through a window and immediately locked the main gate from outside, trapping him inside.
She then informed nearby residents, who later entered the flat and found the four victims lying in pools of blood.
The suspect reportedly attempted to flee by climbing onto the roof and crossing to an adjacent building but was caught by locals and beaten, later succumbed to his injuries.
Police said Antar Majumder had previously lived as a tenant on the fifth floor of the same building for around one and a half years before moving out about eight months ago.
Investigators are also examining whether robbery could have been a motive, as the suspect allegedly knew that rent money was kept with Shahinur Begum and that she possessed gold ornaments.
Raipur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahin Mia said the complaint filed by the victim’s son is being processed as a formal case.
“District police and Detective Branch personnel in plainclothes are actively working in the field. A five-member committee has been formed to investigate the incident, and the probe is ongoing,” he said.
Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital Residential Medical Officer Arup Pal said autopsies on the four bodies had been completed.
“All four victims sustained sharp weapon injuries to the head, chest, hands and other parts of the body,” he added.
