A Dhaka court on Wednesday ordered the seizure of two flats and other immovable assets worth Tk 49.61 lakh belonging to former Janata Bank chairman and Dhaka University economics professor Abul Barkat.
The court also ordered the freezing of his bank accounts and a car worth Tk29 lakh.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Shahjahan Kabir passed the order following an application filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
ACC Assistant Director Mohammad Shahjahan Miraj submitted the application.
According to the ACC application, an investigation is underway against Abul Barkat over allegations that he acquired assets beyond his known sources of income by illegally providing loans to various companies.
During the investigation, the ACC found information on immovable assets worth Tk 49,61,384 in his name.
The application also said he has movable assets worth Tk3.50 crore and assets worth $10,250.
The ACC said Barkat was attempting to transfer his movable and immovable assets. It said any transfer, movement, conversion or sale of the assets before completion of the investigation and disposal of the allegations could harm the interests of the state.
The commission therefore sought an order to seize and freeze the assets.
Following the hearing, the court ordered the authorities concerned to seize Barkat’s two flats and other immovable assets worth Tk 49,61,384. It also ordered the seizure of his car, worth Tk 29 lakh, and the freezing of his bank accounts.
On 10 July 2025, the ACC arrested Abul Barkat from his Dhanmondi residence in connection with an ACC case.
He was later granted bail in that case but was shown arrested in a separate case filed over the killing of businessman Wadud during the July uprising.
He was subsequently granted bail in that case as well and released from jail.
