Police have arrested eight members of an armed robbery gang in connection with the heist of Tk38 lakh at gunpoint in the capital’s Dhanmondi area. A locally made revolver, ammunition, and a portion of the looted money have also been recovered.
The arrests were made during several raids conducted by Dhanmondi Model Police Station under Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
The arrestees have been identified as Tanveer Abedin (Jui), 41; Md Mojibur Rahman, 60; Md Zakir Hossain alias Captain Zakir, 60; Md Solaiman Mridha, 55; Mohammad Kobir Hossain, 50; Abul Kalam Azad, 50; Md Zakaria Hossain alias Lenin, 40; and Sajal Chowdhury, 31.
According to Dhanmondi police sources, a group of eight to ten armed robbers intercepted a man named Md Khorshed Alam, 50, on the paved road in front of Dingi Restaurant on Road No-12/A under Dhanmondi Model Police Station.
The incident occurred around 2:10pm on 30 August, when the gang looted Tk38 lakh from him at gunpoint.
As the robbers attempted to flee, police, with the assistance of residents, managed to apprehend Tanveer and Mojibur from the spot. Officers recovered a locally made revolver and four rounds of bullets from their possession.
Following interrogations and based on information provided by Mojibur, police conducted a raid in Dakshinkhan Police Station area and arrested Zakir.
Subsequently, using intelligence and technological assistance, police launched drives in various parts of the country and arrested the remaining five gang members – Md Solaiman Mridha, Mohammad Kobir Hossain, Abul Kalam Azad, Md Zakaria Hossain alias Lenin, and Sajal Chowdhury.
During these drives, police recovered Tk3,45,350 from Zakaria and Tk2,30,000 from Sajal, bringing the total amount of recovered money to Tk5,75,350.
Dhanmondi Model Police Station has filed two separate cases regarding the incident – one for robbery and another under Arms Act. Police operations are ongoing to arrest the remaining fugitive and unidentified members of the gang and to recover the rest of the looted money.
