At least 87 members of the National Citizen Party (NCP) have resigned from the party in Juraichhari upazila of Rangamati, shortly after five leaders stepped down from the party’s district committee.
The mass resignation includes the convener of the Juraichhari upazila unit, according to a resignation document.
Asim Chakma, convener of the Juraichhari unit and a district committee member, confirmed the matter.
Asim Chakma said “The decision came collectively in view of the current political situation.”
“With the consent of all members of the Juraichhari upazila unit, we joined the National Citizen Party with the hope of building a new political arrangement and a new Bangladesh, carrying the spirit of the July mass uprising,” Asim added.
However, he alleged that the party abandoned that spirit during the 13th national parliamentary election by forming an alliance with a major political party. He said the move undermined the party’s identity and ideals and revived the old political order.
“We can no longer uphold the ideals we believed in. Therefore, we have decided to suspend and dissolve all organisational activities,” he farther said.
Bipin Jyoti Chakma, convener of the Rangamati district committee, confirmed that the party had received the resignation letters of 87 members from Juraichhari upazila.
