The Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) detained 70 individuals, including leaders and activists of the banned Chhatra League, following a sudden street rally in the city.
CMP Assistant Police Commissioner (Public Relations) Aminur Rashid confirmed the arrests to the TIMES of Bangladesh on Tuesday evening.
He said special operations were carried out across 12 police precincts in the city after participants were accused of joining the banned organisation’s rally. The police operation is ongoing.
The rally, organised on Monday morning by activists of the Omar Gani MES College branch of Chhatra League, began near Nasirabad Government High School and proceeded towards the GEC intersection. Videos of the march, showing participants chanting slogans including “Joy Bangla” and “Sheikh Hasina will come”, circulated widely on social media, sparking nationwide discussion.
Police said the special operation aims to identify those involved in activities of the banned group and to take legal action. CMP patrols and targeted operations continue across different areas of the city.
