Police have arrested seven members of a mugging gang, including Imam Hossain, who escaped custody after allegedly stabbing a policeman at Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
The arrestees were Imam Hossain alias Akash, 25, Md Hossain, 19, Rabbi alias Chhoto Akash, 19, Sonia Akter, 24, Asma, 28, Md Munna, 22, and Sumaiya Akter, 24.
According to Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP), Akash was detained on Wednesday morning from Sitakunda area. His accomplices were arrested from different locations across the city.
Mohammad Solaiman, officer-in-charge of Panchlaish Police Station, confirmed the arrest, stating, “We have detained Akash, who fled after attacking a policeman at CMCH. Four others involved in the incident have also been arrested.”
According to police, on Tuesday afternoon, locals caught Akash and another mugger named Shahadat Hossain while they were attempting to snatch valuables from a Chinese national near the Bandar CPR Gate area. The mob beat both suspects before handing them over to police.
Due to injuries sustained in the mob beating, the two were first taken to Bandar Hospital and later transferred to CMCH for further treatment under police custody.
At around 7:50pm, while undergoing treatment at CMCH, a group led by Akash’s younger brother, Hossain, stormed the hospital ward and launched an attack in an attempt to free him. During the incident, constable Delwar Hossain was stabbed and critically injured by the attackers, who then managed to flee with Akash.
Upon being informed, officers from Panchlaish Police Station and CMCH Police Outpost rushed to the scene and arranged emergency medical care for the injured constable.
Following an overnight drive, police detained Akash and his accomplices from Sitakunda in the early hours of Wednesday.
