4 hurt in attack on NCP candidate’s vehicle in Kurigram

At least five people were injured after miscreants attacked the vehicle NCP candidate for the Kurigram-2 constituency Atiq Mujahid in Palashbari area of Kurigram on Wednesday night.

The incident occurred around 11pm while Atiq Mujahid was inspecting a high-risk polling station as part of his election campaign.

The injured were Mujahid’s brother Ashikur Rahman, Nur Amin, 26, Zihad, 30, Sristi, 18, and another unidentified individual.

Rasheduzzaman Towhid, joint convener of NCP’s district committee, confirmed that the attack took place while the candidate’s vehicle was en route to the sensitive voting area.

Atiq Mujahid, who visited the hospital to check on the injured, stated that his brother and four others were forcibly removed from the car and beaten.

He accused 30-35 individuals, allegedly led by Chhatra Dal president Amimul Ihsan, of carrying out the attack.

“We were heading home in our election vehicle when my brother and others were dragged out and assaulted. This was a targeted attack,” Mujahid said, condemning the violence.

He has promised to file a formal complaint with the police and demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible.

Later that night, Mujahid and his supporters staged a protest outside the residence of the district police superintendent, calling for swift action.

In response, Iqbal Rabbi, district secretary of Chhatra Dal, dismissed the allegations. Rabbi accused the NCP of attempting to win sympathy votes by falsely blaming Chhatra Dal for the attack, following their expected defeat in the election.

Kurigram’s Superintendent of Police, Khondkar Fazle Rabbi, assured the public that legal action would be taken against the accused based on the formal complaints filed by the NCP.
