Two suspended Dhaka University (DU) students, Shahriar Tanzil and Shahriar Islam Tushar, have allegedly harassed a young woman and extorted money while impersonating journalists.
The incident took place around 10:30pm on Thursday near the pond beside Ramna Kali Temple in the capital’s Suhrawardy Udyan.
The victim, a student of Dhaka Art College, alleged that a group of youths surrounded her and a friend. One of the youths, claiming to be a DU student and journalist, accessed her private WhatsApp and Facebook messages, made offensive remarks about her personal life, and called several of her contacts.
The group reportedly extorted Tk1,600 before handing over their phone numbers to “settle” the matter later.
Both accused were already serving a six‑month suspension from DU, effective 10 March, for a previous harassment incident at TSC.
Tanzil, formerly joint convener of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) unit of Sir AF Rahman Hall, was expelled from the wing in February. While initially denying the claims, he later admitted his “younger brothers” were involved and said he had refunded the victim to “resolve” the issue.
He later offered a bribe to the reporter to suppress the story.
Tushar, a resident of Bijoy Ekattor Hall, could not be reached for comment.
DU Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed said the accused students are not considered active students as they were suspended. He added the university will review the case if a police complaint is filed and submitted to his office.
