The government will supply protein-rich foods, including milk, eggs, meat and fish at subsidised prices to low-income families during the holy month of Ramadan, said Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, state minister for Agriculture, Food, Fisheries and Animal Resources.
The initiative, he said, is part of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s ongoing commitment to public welfare. Around 10 lakh families across the country are expected to benefit from the programme.
The move is also aimed at stabilising market prices and easing the burden on ordinary consumers.
The minister made the remarks on Thursday at the inauguration of the subsidised milk, egg and meat sales programme, held at the conference hall of the Livestock Research Institute in Mohakhali.
Salauddin Tuku said the government is committed to implementing the Prime Minister’s promises with honesty and dedication.
“Only through collective cooperation we can lead the country towards development and prosperity,” he added.
He noted that unscrupulous traders often raise prices during Ramadan, causing difficulties for low-income people.
“The government’s initiative will help alleviate their hardship. Plans are also underway to expand the programme in the future,” he said.
The minister also announced plans to introduce family cards, agriculture cards and health cards as part of the government’s election pledges, emphasising that integrity, dedication and teamwork are essential to meet public expectations.
He praised BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman for his work for public welfare and highlighted the struggles of former prime minister Khaleda Zia in defending democracy and citizens’ rights.
The event was presided over by Director General (DG) of the Department of Livestock Services Md Abu Sufian. Special guests included Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Abu Tahir Muhammad Zaber, Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council president Mashiur Rahman, and Bangladesh Dairy and Fattening Farmers’ Association president Mohammad Iqbal Hossain. Senior officials from the ministry and related departments were also present.
The programme will provide an important relief to low-income families, ensuring access to essential protein-rich foods at affordable prices during the fasting month.
