Bangladesh Bank spokesperson Arif Hossain Khan on Sunday stated that consumer goods imports rose by 40% compared to last year prior to the elections to ensure market stability. This increase is expected to provide relief to the new administration during the holy month.

Khan however added that curbing unemployment and inflation during the upcoming month of Ramadan will remain a significant test for the newly elected government.

The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) has announced plans to reach approximately 3 million to 3.5 million consumers through its truck-sale programme. In addition to regular items such as soybean oil, lentils, and sugar, the TCB will also provide chickpeas and dates.

The government intends to supply these essential food items at subsidised prices to ensure they remain within the reach of the general public.

Khan emphasised that no crisis is anticipated in the market, noting that port operations have returned to normal.

Consequently, there are no longer any obstacles to the release or transportation of goods. He expressed optimism that there would be no negative impact on inflation as long as the market remains stable.

“No shortage of any product will be seen,” the spokesperson said. “According to the basic principles of economics, if supply meets demand, there will be no negative impact on prices. We hope the people of the country will experience a comfortable Ramadan.”

He added that adequate quantities of products are currently in stock. “If importers distribute the stocked goods correctly, there will be no shortage of any items,” Khan concluded.
