Zohran Mamdani, the first Muslim mayor in the history of New York City, has been elected as the Democratic Party’s candidate. Following the news of his victory, his mother, Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair, expressed her joy on Instagram.
Nair shared a post by Indian filmmaker Zoya Akhtar on her Instagram story that read, “Zohran, you are amazing.” She also added the song Empire State of Mind by American rapper Jay-Z to the story.
After his win, Zohran paid tribute to his parents in an emotional speech. “The person I am today is because of you,” he said. “I am proud to be your child.”
Democratic Party candidate Zohran Mamdani was elected the 111th mayor of New York City in Tuesday’s election, making history by defeating former New York State governor and independent candidate Andrew Cuomo.
An immigrant of both Indian and African heritage, Zohran has also become the youngest mayor of New York in a century.
Mira Nair’s debut film, ‘Salaam Bombay!’ (1988), was nominated for an Oscar, while ‘Monsoon Wedding’ (2001) won the Golden Lion for Best Film at the Venice Film Festival.
Through internationally acclaimed films such as ‘The Namesake’ and ‘Queen of Katwe’, Nair has explored themes of immigration, identity and cultural conflict with profound humanity.
Zohran’s father, Mahmood Mamdani, is a renowned professor of political science at Columbia University. His groundbreaking research on African history, colonialism and ethnicity has been widely recognised. He is the author of ‘Citizen and Subject’ and ‘When Victims Become Killers’, both of which have made a significant impact in the fields of history and political science worldwide.
