Chief Adviser Yunus on Monday expressed his appreciation to the Mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, for his continued support toward the Bangladeshi community, noting their successful social and cultural integration in Italy and their contributions to both nations’ economies.
“Thank you for taking good care of the Bangladeshi migrants,” CA told Mayor Gualtieri during a meeting at the latter’s office.
He highlighted that Bangladeshi expatriates in Italy have become an integral part of the country’s workforce while also playing a vital role in Bangladesh’s economy through remittance inflows.
“They are now culturally integrated here. Many chefs in the top Italian restaurants are from Bangladesh,” he added.
According to CA’s Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder, the Mayor lauded the Bangladeshi diaspora for their constructive contribution to Rome’s diverse social fabric.
Welcoming the chief adviser to his office – situated amid the ruins of ancient Rome dating back to Julius Caesar’s era- Mayor Gualtieri offered him a brief tour from his balcony, showcasing the former Roman Senate and nearby archaeological landmarks.
During the courtesy meeting, the Mayor also presented Yunus with a commemorative plaque engraved with an image of Roman Emperor and philosopher Marcus Aurelius. The same plaque, he noted, has recently been presented to global leaders, including Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
In their discussions, both leaders emphasised the need to deepen cultural and economic ties between Rome and Bangladesh, particularly in light of the more than 50,000 Bangladeshis residing in the Italian capital.
They also exchanged views on Bangladesh’s forthcoming national election, safe migration initiatives, and the prospect of a future visit to Bangladesh by the Italian Prime Minister.
The meeting was attended by SDGs Affairs Principal Coordinator Lamiya Morshed and Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Italy Rokebul Haque.
