A youth climbed a 450-foot-high electricity tower in Shibchar, Madaripur, and staged a hunger strike after a disagreement with his girlfriend.

Shibchar Fire Service In-charge Tapan Kumar Ghosh confirmed the matter. The individual, identified as Hasan Sheikh, was safely lowered from the tower around 10pm on Sunday.

According to locals, Hasan Sheikh climbed the electricity tower located on the banks of the river around 3pm to begin his protest. During the incident, he broadcasted a Facebook Live, where he also threatened to commit suicide.

He chose this hazardous course of action to win back his girlfriend’s affection and demand the continuation of their relationship.

After witnessing him climb the structure, locals immediately alerted the police and Fire Service. Personnel from both services arrived at the scene and worked for nearly six hours to ensure his safe descent.

In-charge Tapan said through significant effort and strategic persuasion, they were able to rescue the youth from the electrical pole. Following the rescue, the youth was handed over to the police.
