A shooting incident at the Shaheed Minar area in the capital on Sunday night has led to the death of a young man. The incident took place around 9:30pm.
The deceased has been identified as Rakibul Islam (27).
Inspector (Investigation) of Shahbagh Police Station confirmed the detention of one individual in connection with the incident, although his identity could not be immediately ascertained.
Preliminary reports indicate that a young man suddenly fired four rounds in public at the Central Shaheed Minar, injuring Rakibul Islam. He was subsequently rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for emergency treatment.
Bystanders apprehended one suspect and handed him over to Dhaka University’s Proctorial Team, who later turned him over to the police.
Dhaka University Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed confirmed that proctorial team members responded to the scene and detained a suspect. He stated that Shahbagh Police Station is currently investigating the matter.
“The incident is under investigation. No Dhaka University student is involved; both the shooter and the victim are outsiders. Police have detained one person,” he told TIMES of Bangladesh.
GM Ishan, who accompanied the victim to the hospital, said he was hanging out near Shaheed Minar when they suddenly heard several gunshots. Upon approaching the scene, they found the young man lying in a pool of blood and immediately rushed him to the hospital.
A friend of the victim, Md Roni, a second-year degree student at Sheikh Borhan Uddin College and video content creator, said Rakib and several friends were having tea at a nearby shop when another individual called him away. Shortly after, they heard gunshots and found Rakib bleeding at Shaheed Minar with gunshot wounds to his head and multiple stab wounds.
Roni resides in Nimitoli, Old Dhaka.
Later, the matter was confirmed by sub-Inspector Md Mithu Fakir of Shahbagh Police Station, stating that Rakib was shot and attacked with sharp weapons at Shaheed Minar. The suspect was detained immediately after the incident.
His condition was on arrival being treated as critical, and an investigation was underway regarding the incident. Later, however, it was confirmed that Rakibul Islam died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 10:30pm.
Rakib sustained one gunshot wound to the head and two gunshot wounds on the left and right sides of his back. Additionally, it has been reported that there are sharp weapon injuries in 6-7 places on his body.
