Police detained a young man with more than $159,000 in foreign currency during a search operation at the Teesta toll plaza area in Lalmonirhat sadar on Thursday evening.
The detainee was identified as Md Likhan Mia, 23, a resident of Ghoshpara area in Kurigram sadar. Police said officers were conducting routine checks at a checkpoint set up on the southern side of the Teesta toll plaza around 6pm.
During the operation, police stopped a suspicious autorickshaw and questioned passenger Likhan Mia.
Later, officers searched his body and recovered the US dollars hidden in an unusual manner.
The seized foreign currency included 1,581 notes of $100 and 24 notes of $50.
The total amount recovered was $159,300, equivalent to nearly Tk2 crore.
Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Swad Islam said police seized the foreign currency and launched an investigation to determine where the detainee collected the dollars and where he was taking them.
Preparations were underway to file a case against him with the police station, he added.
