China’s President Xi Jinping has warned that mishandling the Taiwan issue could drive relations between China and the United States into a “very dangerous situation”.
Xi made the remarks during talks with US President Donald Trump, according to China’s official news agency Xinhua.
He told Trump that Taiwan remains the most important issue in China-US relations.
“If it is handled properly, the relationship between the two countries will remain generally stable. If it is not handled well, the two countries will collide or even conflict, pushing the entire Sino-U.S. relationship into a very dangerous situation.”
He also said that “Taiwan independence” and peace in the Taiwan Strait are incompatible.
China considers democratically governed Taiwan part of its territory, a claim rejected by Taipei. Beijing also opposes US arms sales to the island.
