Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Detective Branch (DB) has arrested three members of an inter-district counterfeit currency syndicate along with fake notes and equipment used in production.
The arrests were made through separate drives in Uttarapara Police Station area and Gazipur Metropolitan area.
DB Uttara Division recovered fake currency worth Tk34 lakh along with manufacturing tools.
The arrested individuals are Md Mujibur Rahman, 38, Md Dulal Mridha, 40 and Md Mamun, 25.
According to DB Uttara Division sources, Mujibur Rahman was arrested from in front of the Shomobay Bazar (BDR) Market under Uttarapara Police Station at around 12:30pm on Wednesday following a tip-off.
During the search, officers recovered Tk4 lakh in fake notes and Tk40,000 in cash from his possession.
Based on his information, DB later conducted a drive at Basan area under Gazipur Metropolitan Police at around 2:05pm the same day and arrested Dulal Mridha and Mamun.
During the operation, police recovered an additional Tk30 lakh in fake notes along with equipment used for producing counterfeit currency. The seized items include a laptop, three colour printers, one roll of golden foil paper, 200 security tags and watermark-printed blank papers.
Police also recovered 100 sheets printed on one side with Tk1,000 notes and blank on the other side, two 2-litre bottles of liquid glue, one cutter and two dye sets used for watermark printing.
DB Uttara Division said the arrested men are active members of an inter-district counterfeit money manufacturing gang.
During preliminary interrogation, they admitted to producing fake notes and distributing them in Dhaka, Narayanganj, Gazipur and other parts of the country.
They also had plans to circulate the fake currency in cattle markets and shopping areas ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha through associates.
Police said the accused are involved in multiple cases in different districts.
A case has been filed against the suspects arrested under the Special Powers Act at Uttarapara Police Station.
