A high-level Bangladesh delegation nominated by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman held talks on Tuesday with Meta Platforms Inc’s Chief Global Affairs Officer Joel Kaplan, on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
While the Prime Minister was unable to join owing to time constraints, the meeting was led by State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam.
The delegation also included Adviser to the Prime Minister Rehan Asif Asad, Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations Irene Khan, and Deputy Permanent Representative AKM Wahiduzzaman.
Noting Bangladesh’s large Meta user base, the State Minister discussed the tech company’s relationship with Bangladesh and key issues relating to the country’s digital platforms.
The discussions covered opportunities to strengthen Bangladesh’s digital economy and e-commerce ecosystem, focusing on how Meta’s platforms and technologies could support businesses, entrepreneurs, SMEs, and digital commerce across the nation.
During the exchange, the State Minister invited Meta to open an office in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
She further underscored the need to prevent online abuse and digital harassment, and discussed the proposed Cyber Security Act in Bangladesh.
