A Dhaka court has granted permanent bail to journalist Anis Alamgir in a case filed by the Anti‑Corruption Commission (ACC).
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Sabbir Faiz passed the order on Thursday. His lawyer Taslima Jahan Poppy confirmed the developments.
The court also rejected Alamgir’s plea to waive personal appearance, directing him to attend hearings in person.
Alamgir appeared before the court as the case was scheduled for hearing. On his behalf, three separate petitions were filed seeking permanent bail, exemption from personal appearance, and permission to travel abroad.
After hearing, the judge rejected the exemption petition but granted the other two.
The ACC filed the case on 15 January, accusing Alamgir of acquiring wealth beyond known sources of income and money laundering. On 25 January, the investigation officer, ACC Assistant Director Akhtaruzzaman, sought to show him arrested in the case. The court granted the plea on 28 January.
However, Alamgir was later granted bail on 11 March.
Earlier, on 14 December, Aryan Ahmed of the July Revolutionary Alliance filed another case under the Anti‑Terrorism Act with Uttara West Police Station. Alamgir was arrested in that case, placed on five‑day remand, and sent to jail on 20 December. He secured bail from the High Court on 5 March.
According to the case statement, Alamgir was found to have assets worth Tk4.25 crore, including immovable property valued at Tk25 lakh and movable assets worth Tk3.84 crore.
But his declared and legitimate income sources amounted to Tk99.09 lakh including past savings of Tk54.45 lakh, Tk19.39 lakh from talk shows and consultancy, Tk22 lakh from plot sales, and Tk3.24 lakh from savings certificates and bank interest.
The ACC calculated that Alamgir possessed Tk3.26 crore more than his known income, about 77 percent of his total wealth, which was classified as illegally acquired assets.
