A Dhaka court has rejected the bail petition of journalist Anis Alamgir in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Faiz passed the order after a hearing on Sunday, said Alamgir’s lawyer Taslima Jahan Poppy.

On 15 January, the ACC filed a case against him over allegations of illegal wealth accumulation. On 25 January, ACC Assistant Director Akhtaruzzaman applied to show Alamgir arrested in the case. The court set 28 January for hearing, and on that day, he was formally shown arrested.

Earlier, on 14 December, detectives took Alamgir to their office for questioning. Later that night, Aryan Ahmed, a member of the “July Revolutionary Alliance,” filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act against Alamgir and three others, accusing them of conspiring to destabilise the state and inciting a banned organisation.

Alamgir was placed on five days’ remand in that case, and after remand ended on 20 December, he was sent to jail, where he has remained since.

However, the High Court recently granted him bail in the case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
